Understand how the NDIS can support you
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) supports people with a disability with funding for services deemed to be reasonable and necessary to achieve their goals and aspirations.
NDIS funding & services
If you’re eligible for the NDIS, you’ll receive funding on an annual basis to pay for the services, aids and equipment that you need to support your disability.
Firstly, there will be a planning and assessment process. This is where all your individual needs relating to your disability will be considered. Then, you can select services from NDIS providers of your choice. You can choose more than one NDIS service provider for services that you need.
NDIS planning and your personal goals
During your NDIS planning meeting, your planner will talk to you about your goals and what you’d like to achieve in all aspects of your life. Think about what’s important to you and create your goals around these points. This way, you’ll be supported to live a life that’s fulfilled and purposeful, aligned with your personal goals.
Holidays and travel as a personal goal
If travel and holidays are important to you, it’s a good idea to talk about this in your NDIS planning meeting. Consider including any of the following goals as part of your plan:
- Improving my social skills
- Doing more social and recreational activities
- Developing new friendships
- Building my confidence to travel
- Giving the people who support me informally a break
- Challenging myself in new environments
- Connecting with family
- Improving my overall health and happiness

Can I use NDIS funding for holidays?
If your holiday supports the goals in your NDIS plan, the NDIS may fund certain disability-related supports while you travel. This includes the cost of a support worker to accompany you while on holiday. However, it’s important to note that the NDIS does not cover general travel costs like accommodation, flights, meals, or activities. These expenses must be covered by you or your family.
What’s the difference between respite and a holiday?
Respite (also known as Short-Term Accommodation) provides funding for both care and accommodation when you need a break from your usual home environment. This funding can benefit both you and your informal carers – family members, friends or close relatives who provide unpaid care and support. It gives them a chance to rest while you receive care in a different setting. Learn more about Respite Care with Leisure Options.
A holiday, on the other hand, is for leisure and recreation. While a holiday might give your informal carers a break, it focuses on fun, relaxation, and personal enrichment. If your NDIS plan includes funding for support during your holiday, Leisure Options will claim the support hours for your care, while you cover the cost of travel, accommodation, and activities.
